Description

Delicious chocolate chip hazelnut scones that are perfect for breakfast or a snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 80 ml Milk (room temp; see notes for options)
  • 60 g Unsweetened Plain Yogurt (or greek style yogurt; see notes for options)
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 250 g All-Purpose Flour
  • 50 g Light Brown Sugar
  • 1½ tsp Baking Powder
  • ½ tsp Baking Soda
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 110 g Salted Butter (cold & cut into cubes; see notes for options)
  • 185 g Mini Chocolate Chips
  • 85 g Hazelnuts (chopped and toasted)
  • 1 tbsp Cane Sugar (or Demerara sugar)
  • 23 tbsp Milk or Cream (see notes for options)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C)
  2. Lightly toast the hazelnuts and chop them coarse
  3. In a bowl combine flour, light brown sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Mix well.
  4. Add cold butter. Mix using a pastry cutter or a fork until it becomes a sandy texture.
  5. Add milk, yogurt and vanilla. Mix just until it starts to come together, do not overmix.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips and hazelnuts.
  7. Flour a flat surface and place dough down, lightly sprinkling more flour on top.
  8. Knead very lightly until it comes together, adding more flour as needed to avoid sticking.
  9. Shape into a circle about 1 inch thick.
  10. Cut into 8 pieces like a pizza, you may need to flour your knife in between cuts to avoid sticking.
  11. Chill the dough for 1 hour or freeze it overnight.
  12. Place scones on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, brush with cream/milk and sprinkle cane sugar.
  13. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or just until they become golden brown, and the bottoms begin to brown.
  14. Let them cool on the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.

Notes

  • For room temperature milk, simply take it out of the fridge 30 minutes before using.
  • You can use Greek yogurt as a substitute for unsweetened plain yogurt.
  • Ensure the butter is cold and cubed to achieve the desired texture in the scones.
